Talking With Children About Climate Change
September 2021 | Issue No. 213
Winter Weather Tips

More severe weather in the form of hurricanes and floods, wildfires, extreme temperatures, and other effects of climate change can take a toll on both the physical and mental health of kids. In a recent survey of young people in the United States and nine other countries, 60% of respondents said they were "very worried" or "extremely worried" about climate change. Many said they felt "sad," "anxious," "‘angry," and "powerless." Read this age-by-age guide for helpful ways to talk with your children about climate change, giving them a hopeful sense of power to make a difference.

Reading is about more than literacy. It provides an opportunity to teach our children about kindness, compassion, and empathy for others. Diversity of characters matters, and all kids should be able to see themselves as the stars of their own stories. Here's a sampling of favorite titles collected by pediatricians to help you select and share books with your children. And if your family is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, which continues through October 15, you may find some great new reads.
